I'm back

Call me selfish, but I just couldn’t bring myself to poke my nose in here until after I’d had a chance to finish A Memory of Light. It took me A LOT longer than I would have anticipated; I do so hate it when RL interferes with my reading.

But I HAVE finally finished it, at least my first time trough, and look forward to re-engaging with you good folk.

I’ll not discuss my thoughts on the book just yet, as I just closed its cover a few moments ago, so no spoilers here.

May the light shine on you all.

THE most underrated scene in the entire movie. It was perfect. And do you know how often I see gif sets of it? This is the second one I’ve seen since the movie came out (It’s been over 5 months, now).

So let’s just pause for a moment from reblogging gifs of Tony’s sass, Loki’s sex appeal, or Bruce’s fluffiness and just appreciate this nameless, old, German guy and how, even though he knew he would probably die, he stood up to a tyrant to prove that the human race wouldn’t give up their freedom so easily.

Things I'm doing waiting for A Memory of Light

Visiting the public library.

This is something I have not done in ages, but I have found my book consumption has outgrown my budget by several degrees of magnitude. .

At one point I could have spent years just re-reading my home library, but 2 moves ago I decided hauling about several hundred pounds of books was more than these old bones could face, so I donated almost all my paperbacks and a large percent of my hardcovers.

And you know what? It’s kind of nice to get back out there and explore a bit.

To date among the treasure’s I’ve found at the local library are 1st 3 books of Stephen Donaldson’s Last Chronicles of Thomas Covenant and two of his The Man Who… books, Brandon Sanderson’s Warbreaker, and I’ve also begun Orson Scott Card’s Alvin Maker series.

My latest discovery, really re-discovery, is my appreciation for shorter forms. After years of reading almost nothing that didn’t take 3 (or more) volumes, it’s been nice to read stories that can be completed, set-up, conflict, resolution and all, in just a single sitting.

My first venture was Legends II, which my fellow WoT fans will recognize as the successor to the volume where the story that became New Spring first appeared. In fact it was one of the tales contained therein which introduced me to Alvin Maker.

Currently I’ve started another volume of short stories, this time under the Sci-fi rubric, called The New Space Opera. And again, it’s a wonderment to me that a very compelling story, with some very interesting characters and ideas can be told in so few pages. And while it’s true that such tales lack the immersive qualities of LotR or Wot, still I find it a great way to acquaint myself with new authors and types of writing that might be prohibitively expensive in time and money with longer works.

So yay for new adventures, at the library, in another time, or in another galaxy.

So as I understand it, Washington and Colorado passed laws for legal recreational marijuana use. Also, as I understand it, laws against marijuana use are federal, not state.

Since state laws don’t overrule federal laws, how does this all work out?

The President has directed the DEA not to enforce the federal laws in those states, IIRC. And the FBI has bigger fish to fry.

Don’t start that pot plantation quite yet. The individual US Attorneys seem to make up their own minds on prosecutions. In San Diego she has shut down virtually every medical marijuana dispensary in town. Read this.
